World of Warcraft Item Upgrade and Set Bonuses
The upgrade for an item is an enchantment which increases the base stats of certain armor or weapons. This includes secondary stats such as Leech or Speed.

Leveling
Upgrades allow players to upgrade their items by increasing their levels. The level increase also improves the item's "guaranteed" bonuses. item upgrading upgrade grants a bonus based on tier and increases a stat by +3. These bonuses range from +3 bonus, to a +1 bonus or an unspecified buff.
Each item can be upgraded a limited amount of times. After the upgrade, the item can still be upgraded to a higher-tiered product of equal or greater value.
This system is useful for players who want to purchase equipment that has a specific amount of stats prior acquiring a new item. Transfer is user-friendly and allows players to avoid wasting upgrading materials.
Upgrade materials can be collected by players when they clear content. They can be used to upgrade or replace an item. Each item requires a different type of upgrade material. Weapons require Destruction stones while armor items require Guardian or Harmony Leapstones. The materials are named after when the item is upgraded, for instance Stone Fragments become Stones and Harmony Shards become Life Shards.

Some of these set bonuses are only available for certain equipment. If you purchase the entire Phantom Armor set, you will get +8 defense (instead of the +3 defense that you receive with the majority of gear). Certain sets are only available through completing specific tasks or buying them from the Auction House.
It is also possible to acquire Set Bonuses on several pieces of equipment at the same time. For instance, if have the complete Kestra's Descent set and the parts that match from the Twinblade of Shadow you will receive the + version of that set's bonus when you can meet it.
